EYFS Early Years Learning Story Template
A learning story in the early years typically focuses on a child’s personal growth and development in a playful and natural environment. It’s focus is the process of learning rather than the outcome, and it captures a moment or series of moments that are significant in the child’s educational journey.
Key Components of a Learning Story in Early Years:
- Setting: The story is usually set in an early childhood education environment like a preschool, nursery or a home setting. The environment is rich with opportunities for exploration, play, and interaction.
- Characters: The main character is typically a young child, usually between the ages of 2 to 6 years. Teachers, parents, or peers may also play supporting roles, providing guidance, encouragement, or interaction.
- Observation of an Activity: The story begins with an observation of the child engaging in an activity or play. This could be anything from drawing, building with blocks, playing with toys, engaging in pretend play, or exploring outdoors.
- Learning Process: The narrative focuses on how the child interacts with their environment and the learning process. This includes their curiosity, problem-solving skills, social interactions, and emotional responses.
- Teacher’s or Caregiver’s Role: Adults in the story often play a facilitative role, providing support, asking open-ended questions, or offering resources to help extend the child’s thinking and exploration.
- Developmental Milestones or Achievements: The story may highlight a developmental milestone or a new skill the child has acquired. This could be anything from learning to count, recognising letters, improving social skills, or developing motor abilities.
- Reflection: The story usually ends with a reflection on what the child learned, how they felt about the experience, and its significance in their development. It may also include thoughts on future learning opportunities or ways to further support the child’s growth.
- Emphasis on the Whole Child: Learning stories in early years are holistic, focusing not just on cognitive development, but also on social, emotional, physical, and creative growth.
The overall aim of a learning story is to capture a meaningful and relatable experience that illustrates the child’s learning journey in a rich, contextualised manner. It’s a narrative that celebrates the unique ways in which young children explore, understand, and interact with the world around them.

Phonics Phase 1 planning
This is great we have printed it out and we use daily for the Nursery children for a short Phonics activity. It has saved me loads of time and is really well thought out and each activity is clearly explained so the staff know what to do. Each time they teach Phonics they are becoming more confident with presenting.
