Early Years Calendar

Remembrance Sunday is a day of commemoration observed in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries to remember the sacrifices made by servicemen and women during times of war and conflict.

It is observed on the second Sunday of November, coinciding with Armistice Day on November 11th.

In an early years setting, educators can introduce children to Remembrance Sunday and its significance in a gentle, age-appropriate manner that focuses on the themes of peace, bravery, and unity.

Here are some ideas for learning about and celebrating Remembrance Sunday in an early years education setting:

Art Activity: Have children create artwork that represents the themes of peace, unity, and bravery. Encourage them to use various art materials and techniques to create their masterpieces, and display the artwork around the classroom as a reminder of these important values.

Circle Time Discussion: Talk about the importance of peace, unity, and bravery in our everyday lives. Encourage children to share their thoughts and experiences related to these themes, and discuss ways they can practice these values at home and school.

Poppy Craft: Create paper poppies, the symbol of Remembrance Sunday, using red and black construction paper, tissue paper, or cupcake liners. Discuss the symbolism of the poppy as a way to remember and honor those who have served in wars and conflicts.

Observing a Moment of Silence: On Remembrance Sunday, explain to the children that you will be observing a short, age-appropriate moment of silence to honor those who have served in wars and conflicts. Encourage them to sit quietly and think about the themes of peace, unity, and bravery during this time.

Storytime: Read age-appropriate books or stories that focus on themes of peace, unity, and bravery. Avoid graphic content and focus on stories that convey the importance of coming together in difficult times and working towards a peaceful future.

By incorporating Remembrance Sunday themes into your early years setting, you can introduce children to the importance of peace, unity, and bravery while fostering a sense of empathy and understanding for others.
